Type Locality and Naming

Northeast Liaoning. The Hutouling Fm was named by the No.9 Party of Geology, Liaoning Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1986. The type section is in Wuchong, Shangnian Mazhou Township, Fushun County, Liaoning Province. Lower-middle (2 of 6) formation of Shyatun Gr.

Synonym: (虎头岭组)


Lithology and Thickness

The Hutouling Fm is composed of littoral carbonates intercalated with slate. Lower part consists of laminated dolomite, dolomite with chert concretions (bands). Middle part is laminated (streaky) slate and laminated silty slate. Upper part is medium-thick-bedded dolomite with chert concretions (bands). It is recorded as 864 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The formation is in conformable contact with underlying Tongjiajie Fm.

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Erdaogou Fm

Regional extent

Northeast Liaoning. It is distributed in the Fanhe drainage area. Laterally, it changes little in lithologic character, but greatly in its thickness, e.g., it is only 679 m thick around Sanchazi, Tieling County, Liaoning Province.
